Hand Bag Cake Tutorial

Inspired by a $20K lively pink hand bag, this handbag cake is a delicious and affordable alternative for those of us who would never dream of spending that much on an accessory.

I always smile when people comment on YouTube that ‘she must have made it hundreds of times before’.  The video you see is actually me making the cake for the first time. So who taught me to do a zip like that? Well I just looked at a zip on a handbag and try to figure out what else has evenly-spaced thin parts that could make those little indents?  I did some tests on scraps of fondant until I had it down. The aluminum flashing for the pattern is a similar method that I used to make my Twitter and iPad cakes.  You can actually buy patterned texture mats, but they’re expensive and most people will only make a cake like this once, so this is a much cheaper alternative. Hope you enjoy.

To make the cake you will need:

Hand Bag Cake Template with guides for cutting the cake and fondant pieces.
This cake 25cm (9.84 inches) x 19cm (7.48 inches) x 11 cm (4.33 inches) (Length x Height x Width) and will make about 35 serves.

If you want the a bigger cake you will need to enlarge the template and increase the quantities accordingly.

Double the quantity of the chocolate cake recipe baked in two trays 38cm (14.96 inches) x 25cm (9.84 inches) x 2.5cm (0.98 inches)
400g (14.11 ounces) red fondant
1400g (49.38 ounces) white fondant
200g (7.05 ounces) black fondant
To make the lively pink fondant mix the red and white fondant and add a tiny bit of yellow and blue gel colour.
edible gold luster dust
Shine spray (optional)
2 quantities of Chocolate Buttercream frosting mixed with 1 quantity of chocolate ganache

  4. Hi Ann!
your so extremely talented. I went to culinary school and have been wanting to brush up on my fondant. i am going to try to make this cake this weekend. I know there is some controversy on whether fondant can be in the refrigerator or not but i was wondering if i make this cake and let it sit in the fridge overnight will it still be okay? I know the color can bleed sometimes and I don’t want to ruin something so perfect!

      • Hi Anna how many peoples does this cake feed. I need to make it for 25 people do you think i need to make the bigger size

  9. hi I just tried making the cake with the template and it came out pretty good. The only problem I had was that I followed the ways you did it and I didn’t add any support inside the cake and once I started to decorate it it started to fall back. I fixed it a little but it’s not straight any more. Other than that it came out good. Thanks for the template.

    • Hi Lisseth, It looks fantastic. Did you refridgerate the cake so the ganace etc set before adding your decorative elements? If you did then if you made it again, you could add supports.

      • Hello I was finally able to hand the bag cake , watching your video again and again , thanks for sharing tutorials so incredible . cake I made for my sister and was amazed

  13. Amazing cake… We made it for my sister’s 30th birthday and she was over the moon… Thank you!!!

    • Hi Nichola, Your cake looks amazing! Awesome job.

  14. Hi Ann
I followed your tutorial and attempt to make this bag as a practice before I make the Cars cake for my son’s 2nd birthday. It wasn’t all a success because the handle broke but I feel proud that I manage to complete the bag well eventhough it was my first attempt with usin fondant. Thank you for being a great teacher.

    Regards,
    Yanti

    • Hi Yanti, This is brilliant and especially considering it’s your first effort. Well done!

  15. i was not able to print my template using both of my laptops, so I printed from my cell phone. I’m I suppose to in large everything because it doesn’t look big enough. It looks like the cake would be a kid size purse. What is the actual dimension for the cake

    • hi marsha, when you print it make sure that it’s set at 100%. It should be spread over a couple of pages.

    • Hi Marsha The cake is modelled on the size of the Louis Vuitton Alma BB which is 25 x 19 x 11 cm (Length x Height x Width)
There is also an Alma GM 38cm length, PM 32cm length and MM 36cm length – if you wish to make it to match one of those sizes you will need to enlarge it 😀

  16. HI, Admin How to cook that.
how do i get the template for Louis Vuitton bag. Please

    Fran

  17. So new to cake decorating but absolutely love it. Making this for my wifes bday. Just wanted to ask what you used as far fondant goes. Could i use marshmallow fondant to cover the cake and for the sculpted pieces? Keep up the great work you are the reason i am getting started with this. Also i am in the military and would like to do a cake for my office. Have you done any military type cakes before?

    • Hi Jonathan, You could use Marshmallow fondant, but it tends to not be as pliable. I don’t have anything military on the website at the moment. Let us know if you come up with any great ideas.

  18. bom dia

  19. Hi. I’m going use renshaw fondant. Do I need to buy modelling fondant for the straps? Or add tylose to keep them hard?
    Thanks

    • Hi, Either use modelling fondant (which already has tylose in it) or use normal fondant and add tylose. If you have time to make it ahead, you can just make the handles with normal fondant and let then dry out.

  20. Hi Anne, a good close friend of mine asked me to make her and her twin sister’s 60th birthday cake for end of January this year. I asked what sort of cake they wanted and told me she would leave it up to me to do whatever I thought, as she would be happy with anything I made….Both sisters love their shopping, so I googled for ideas and came across your website. As soon as I saw the Louis Vuitton hand bag, I knew right away that is what I would make them. Here is the completed hand bag, and both sisters absolutely loved it. Also, more important, I am so glad I came across your website as I love all your creations and look forward to seeing something new every Friday. Thank you again, and keep those new ideas coming.

    • Thanks Sophie.
